Family First apologise for gay slur

FAMILY First Senator Steve Fielding has apologised for comments by one of the party’s Queensland candidates, who urged his Liberal opponent to come clean over her sexuality.

Senator Fielding has reprimanded Ben Jacobsen, who is running for the far north Queensland seat of Leichhardt.

Mr Jacobsen is running against former government staffer Charlie McKillop, who is hoping to succeed retiring Liberal Warren Entsch.

In Brisbane’s Courier Mail newspaper today, Mr Jacobsen said voters in Leichhardt had a right to know if Ms McKillop was gay.

“The voters might not give a rat’s if a candidate is gay,” he told the newspaper.

“But they have a right to know who you’ll bat for.”

Senator Fielding said Mr Jacbosen’s comments did not reflect the view of the party.

“I have spoken to the candidate and told him that his comments were inappropriate and offensive,” he said.

“Mr Jacobsen has apologised to the Liberal candidate and, on behalf of the party, I also sincerely apologise for the hurt caused.”

Mr Jacobsen’s outburst wasn’t the first time Ms McKillop has been attacked by a rival.

Nationals opponent Ian Causland last month suggested that it was not a suitable seat for a woman.

Ms McKillop was not immediately available for comment.

Some gay activists believe closet homosexuals should always be outed.

Why aren’t they thanking this Family First bloke, who seems to think he’s done just that?
