Sir Elton Sounds Off Against Anti-Gay Bigots
‘We should all stand up and speak out,’ singer says as 60th birthday approaches.
SIR ELTON JOHN has used the publicity surrounding his upcoming 60th birthday to highlight gay rights causes.
“Men and women are persecuted and attacked every day all over the world, just because of who they love and who they make love to,” Elton told the New Statesman.
In particular, Elton drew attention to the plight of William Hernandez, whose gay rights campaign in El Salvador has drawn armed attacks.
“People like William are a lot braver than me,” said Elton. But the singer was also keen to mention the homophobia present closer to home.
He noted that it was only within the last two years that he was able to ‘marry’ long-tern partner David Furnish and said: “Whether the bigot is in our local pub or a thousand miles away, we should all stand up and speak out for these basic human rights.”
